ACT Reading prep guide

Find the evidence behind your answer.

ACT Reading preparation is about making careful decisions from a passage. Practice identifying what the author actually says, what the text reasonably implies, and where an answer goes beyond the available evidence.

What to focus on in ACT Reading

01

Main ideas, details, and inference

Separate the central point from a supporting example. For an inference, connect the relevant details and reject choices that add assumptions the text does not support.

02

Language, purpose, and perspective

Use surrounding sentences to interpret a word. Notice who is speaking, how a paragraph is organized, and why the author includes a particular detail.

03

Connections across sources

Compare claims in paired passages and connect prose with a relevant chart or table. Check whether the sources agree, differ, or address different parts of a question.

A starting routine for Reading

Start with understanding. Add timing when you can explain your choices.

  1. Begin with an untimed passage or guided example so you can focus on finding evidence.
  2. After each practice answer, compare your reasoning with the explanation. Identify the exact detail or relationship you missed.
  3. Move to timed passage or section practice, then use the results to select your next focus. Return later to fresh material to check whether the approach transfers.

How Theo helps with Reading

After checking a Reading answer, ask Theo to explain the supporting evidence or distinguish two tempting options. The goal is to return to the passage and justify your choice, not to replace reading with an AI summary.

What your practice can tell you

Reading practice uses original passages and questions. Saved results show practice evidence and later retention, not a validated prediction of your ACT score. The pathway continues to grow.

Families can review saved results together, with optional shared summaries and opt-in weekly emails. Read the parent guide.

Questions about Reading prep

Do I need to memorize vocabulary lists first?

For this pathway, practice interpreting words in context. A familiar word can take on a different meaning in a particular sentence; use the passage to test your interpretation.

Should I start with timed Reading practice?

If finding evidence is difficult, begin untimed. Once you can explain your choices, add timing and review where you spend time. Speed alone does not show understanding.
