ACT English prep guide

Make an edit you can explain.

ACT English asks you to revise writing in context. Grammar matters, but so do the purpose of a paragraph, the order of its ideas, and the precision of a sentence. Read around the proposed change before choosing an answer.

What to focus on in ACT English

01

Sentence structure and punctuation

Identify complete clauses, sentence boundaries, and the job of a punctuation mark. Check agreement and verb usage in the whole sentence rather than choosing what merely sounds familiar.

02

Clear, concise language

Compare wording for precision, repetition, and tone. A shorter choice is useful only when it keeps the intended meaning and fits the surrounding writing.

03

Purpose and organization

Consider whether a detail supports the paragraph’s goal. Read before and after a transition, and use the flow of ideas to judge sentence placement and introductions.

A starting routine for English

Start with understanding. Add timing when you can explain your choices.

  1. Choose an English lesson for a recurring mistake, such as sentence boundaries or transitions.
  2. Try passage practice and read the explanation after each answer. Name the rule or purpose behind the best choice.
  3. Use timed practice to combine decisions. After submitting, review your results and return to fresh questions on the skills that need attention.

What your practice can tell you

English editing and Reading comprehension use different decisions. In English, you are improving a text; in Reading, you are interpreting evidence in a text. Keep those two kinds of practice separate.
