ACT Math prep guide

Understand the step. Then solve it yourself.

ACT Math preparation works best when you can explain why a method fits the problem. Start with a specific skill, connect the equation to what the question asks, and check your work before adding time pressure.

What to focus on in ACT Math

01

Number sense and algebra

Review fractions, exponents, equations, and systems. Pay attention to signs and parentheses, and practice translating a word problem into an expression before calculating.

02

Functions and geometry

Connect formulas to graphs and diagrams. Identify what a function input means, label the quantities in a figure, and distinguish a length from an area or volume.

03

Data, probability, and modeling

Interpret averages and variation, reason about likelihood, and decide whether a mathematical model matches the situation. Units and a reasonable estimate can help you check an answer.

A starting routine for Math

Start with understanding. Add timing when you can explain your choices.

  1. Choose one topic from the Math skills map. If you are unsure where to begin, use the untimed starting check.
  2. Work through an explanation, then solve fresh topic questions without copying the method line by line.
  3. Review mistakes and return for a later check. Add mixed or timed practice when you can explain the reasoning.

In Math chat, type your own question or ask Theo to explain a confusing step. Ask for a hint before a full solution, then try a fresh problem independently. Theo is AI and can make mistakes; check important calculations.

What your practice can tell you

A correct answer immediately after seeing a solution is different from remembering the method later. Use saved results and later checks to choose what needs more practice, rather than treating one successful attempt as mastery.

Families can review saved results together, with optional shared summaries and opt-in weekly emails. Read the parent guide.

Questions about Math prep

Should I practice without a calculator?

Sometimes. Working through a simple calculation can reveal a sign or fraction mistake. For test preparation, also practice deciding when a permitted calculator helps. Check ACT’s current calculator policy before test day.

Does Math practice include official ACT questions?

Raise Your ACT uses original practice questions and authored explanations. It is independent of ACT and does not claim official-question licensing or a guaranteed score increase.
